Darktable forum11/23/2023 ![]() Camberabits and every other software company on the planet changes their software all the time, if they didn't, they wouldn't stay in business.Īdditional PM ALREADY supports different naming conventions, just open up the preferences and look under the Files section and you'l see a drop-down clearly labelled "File Extensions". To claim "we'd have to change our software to something non-standard" is ridiculous. (case in point, Word Perfect did this when Microsoft release MS Word in early 1990s. For Camberabits to essentially claim, "Sorry, we're following whatever our competitor dictates." doesn't really seem like the best business decision. The very software company many of us are attempting to avoid. Keep in mind, this "standard" is being put forth by Adobe. But that's kind of a lame argument when there is no official standard and the only document dictating a convention is ambiguous in it's definition of "proper filename". One could also argue that since Darktable is the only software doing something different, then "what everyone else does" is the defacto standard. xmp extension added to it, and PM is violating said "standard" by REPLACING the existing extension with. Handy if you re-tag everything as I did it and have a bucket load to get rid of.So, one could argue that Darktable IS following the "standard", since the original name of the file is preserved, with a. ![]() If you find that you have lots of unused tags as you migrate across, there is a handy luarc script to delete unused tags on DT start-up. I then plan on using a more complex tag hierarchy for the other searches I require, using this approach has saved me a shed load of tags already so far. Just as good and no need for lots of unnecessary tags. Instead of having lots of tags I have one called Family|All, The All tells me that there are folders that contain the images so I then narrow down my search using the folders option. So lets say you have all you family members under a hierarchy. ![]() Under the tags selection, you can select a tag and then narrow down your search via folders (plus other criteria). The first is to use a tag/folder combination. it became almost unusable in the end as it was far too complex so I am adopting a different method using a combinations of folders and tags using two approaches. Under Lightroom I had many (a lot!) of tags. In the early days I was trying different folder scenarios so this was handy way to scrap an Idea and start again from a given point. I make regular backups of this folder as a safety and as restore point if I screw up. Remember AppData is a hidden folder so you will need to enable hidden file view in Windows to see it (Shout if you need help). Here's a few tips/thoughts if you want/need them.ĭarktable stores the database and associated control stuff in C:\Users\XXXXXX\AppData\Local\darktable where xxx is your user name on the PC. Now my images are split into many folders as Windows may slow down a bit of you put everything into one folder so be careful. Only another 50K or so to go and I am done for the first stage. I am slowly migrating all my Lightroom stuff across too and I Just hit the 80K mark, it all seems to be running fine so far and the PC memory usage is pretty small compared to Lightroom.
